What is Mindful Self-Massage?

As developed by Raphael Lavoie-Brand, award-winning Certified Massage Therapist

Quality of Touch

  • Being present with our hands (like never before)
  • Listening and communicating through touch with our autonomic nervous system
  • Building a caring relationship with our body, with a type of touch usually reserved for specialized professionals.

Gentle Movements

  • Mindful movement in the spirit of massage can be experienced as a soothing touch within the the many layers of the body.
  • Combined with the awareness of breath, all body regions are reachable though gentle mouvements (especially : back, hips, belly) - Partly inspired by BMC® and Trager®

Self-Compassion and Mindfulness

  • Cultivating a warm intention of care, within the spaciousness of presence (Kristin Neff, Christopher Germer)
  • Being kind with ourself on a non-verbal level (touch as a primal language of safety - Polyvagal Theory
  • Savoring : Awareness of positive sensations for a happier brain (Rick Hanson)

Grounded in :
Anatomy, Neuroscience and Touch Research

  • Evidence-based approach with space for creativity and experimentation

Hi, I am Raphael!

I am a Certified Massage Therapist from Canada (Quebec) and an award-winning developer of Mindful Self-Massage.

For me, teaching Mindful Self-Massage is not optional... it is a calling.

During the early pandemic lockdowns, I was very worried about the mental health of isolated people. Society collectively "discovered" that touch is an actual need. What could I do to help as a touch-based professional?

Long story short, I developed Mindful Self-Massage based on experimentation and my background in multiple body-based approaches and mindfulness.

It worked! Teaching and developing self-massage has become my full-time activity with thousands of online participants. First in French, now also in English!

At the 2026 Integrative Health Congress (in Quebec, Canada), I was honoured to receive the People's Choice Award.

This led to collaborating with university professors for a full chapter about self-massage in an upcoming academic book exploring integrative health methods.

I am more convinced than ever that Mindful Self-Massage is capable of small revolutions in people's lives.

Caring touch is not only a need, it is a vital pre-verbal language directly speaking with our autonomic nervous system.

It can help in dealing with stress, anxiety, sleep difficulties, digestive discomforts, muscular tensions, pain management, concentration, body activation, nervous system regulation, vagus nerve stimulation (vagal toning), sport recovery, and more.
